Red Beans and Ricely Yours,

-- Louis Armstrong

Program for ages 5-18.

Red Beans and Rice is a soul food staple, but more than that, it was Louis Armstrong's favorite dish-- we even have his recipe for it! Beans in general feature in the history of African-American food.

So, in honor of Black History Month, and this famous jazz musician, together we'll cook up a batch of red beans and rice from his recipe. We'll talk about cooking both dry and canned beans and compare the two as well. Musically, we'll talk about and listen to Louis Armstrong, and even watch a video of Louis Armstrong and his wife Lucille demonstrating the recipe on tv.

Since beans prefer to be slow cooked, a completed vegetarian version of the dish will be available for tasting (a ham version may also be available).
